Most N99 masks are called disposable filter respirators, which means that, ideally, they can only be used by one person once. It is generally recommended to throw away the N99 disposable mask when it is contaminated or exposed to dangerous particles all day.
However, when many people wear masks and masks all day, the CDC released information on how to disinfect N99 masks. However, they do not recommend reuse of masks, unless in an emergency, N99 masks can be disinfected for reuse.
The acceptable sterilization process requirements for washable N99 masks are as follows:
Masks must remain effective against COVID-19.
Sterilization cannot affect the filtration capacity.
It must not affect the face that fits the wearer.
The mask must still be safe for the wearer (no chemical gases escape).
For N99 masks, the following decontamination methods are not recommended:
Ethylene oxide has caused concerns about exhaust gas.

The use of microwaves will melt the respirator close to the metal components and affect its comfort.
Autoclaves, high temperatures, and steam can cause filter degradation.
Disinfect N99 masks for reuse
There are three methods that have shown the most potential to purify N99 masks: using damp heat, steaming hydrogen peroxide, or exposing the mask to ultraviolet radiation. Please note that every mask should be inspected for damage or deterioration and pass a seal inspection before being worn again.
●Steam hydrogen peroxide
This method kills resistant bacteria, spores and viruses. 3M company used this method to disinfect the mask up to 20 times without seeing any degradation, but when a larger dose is used for disinfection, the efficiency of the filter will be reduced. The machines used for disinfection are dangerous and require extensive training for operators.
The use of ultraviolet radiation can prevent coronavirus-related viruses without affecting the filtering ability of the mask for 10-20 sterilizations. However, ultraviolet rays can damage the belt and the face sheet, and exposing the lower layer to radiation is a challenge. High doses of ultraviolet rays can decompose the material of the mask itself.
●Heat and humidity
Heating the N99 mask at a temperature of 60-75 degrees Celsius for half an hour can stop the virus related to COVID-19, but it has not been tested on the coronavirus itself. This is an effective way to disinfect masks, because heating them at 60 degrees Celsius and 80% humidity does not seem to damage their filtering capabilities.
●Vapor and liquid hydrogen peroxide
The CDC also tested masks sterilized with steam and liquid hydrogen. They use a steam bag in a low-power microwave oven to kill bacteria without causing up to three damages to the mask. They also noticed that soaking the N99 respirator in 6% liquid hydrogen for half an hour did not affect the filtration, but they did not test the fit integrity afterwards.
When disinfecting N99 masks, do not:
Use soapy water; this will reduce the quality of the mask material and affect its ability to properly filter small particles.
Use alcohol or bleach; this affects the ability of the mask to effectively filter harmful substances.
It is assumed that it is clean after overnight storage; the coronavirus can survive for 3 days or more on certain substances.
