There are three levels of respiratory protection in the form of disposable dust masks: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3-FFP stands for "Filtering Face Piece", and the number indicates the level of protection. P1, P2, and P3 are the shortened forms of these acronyms that many people have, meaning that they have not changed. In addition, some people refer to these levels as respirator codes, respirator filter codes, or respirator levels, and the meaning remains the same.

The Different Between FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3

FFP1 dust mask

What can the P1 filter prevent?

Prevent solid and liquid aerosols.

Prevent low levels of dust.

It can be used for manual grinding, drilling and cutting.

OEL: A material whose protective concentration is 4 times the limit.

APF: Prevent materials whose concentration is 4 times the limit.

FFP2 dust mask

What can the P2 filter prevent?

Prevent solid and liquid aerosols.

Prevent moderate levels of dust.

Higher protection than FFP1

Can be used for plastering and sanding.

OEL: Protect the material with a concentration of 12 times the limit.

APF: Prevent materials whose concentration exceeds 10 times the limit.

FFP3 dust mask

What can the P3 filter prevent?

Prevent solid and liquid aerosols.

Prevent higher levels of dust.

Higher protection than FFP1 and FFP2.

It can be used to process hazardous powders, such as those used in the pharmaceutical industry.

OEL: A material whose protective concentration is 50 times the limit.

APF: Prevent materials whose concentration exceeds 20 times the limit.

Can be used as asbestos mask

The current NHS guidelines stipulate that when infectious diseases are spread through aerosols (coughing, sneezing, etc.), FFP3 masks should be used to control viral and bacterial infections

How to choose between mask ratings

The mask is selected according to the FFP grade.

Determine the type and level of pollutant exposure.

Choose a comfortable and convenient mask.

The occupational exposure limit is the upper limit of acceptable concentration, set by the national authority.

Assess airborne hazards in the workplace (or workshop).

If in doubt, it is always right to choose a higher level of protection.
